Malgré ce que peuvent penser certains réactionnaires ignares et rétrogades, les groupes de rock ne profitent pas tous d'un système qu'ils rejettent, celui des multinationales culturcides, la carotte que bien des ânes suivent et suivront. THE EX existe depuis 1979. Après deux albums très anarcho-punks, la musique du groupe s'oriente vers des compositions plus expérimentale où le rock, le jazz, le folk et l'expérimentation forme un tout d'une rare cohérence et sans compromis. Pas de compromis non plus pour la vente des disques, le groupe apposant systématiquement le sticker "N'achetez pas cet album plus de...". Leurs enregistrements servent souvent à financer des projets, des causes ou tout simplement à dénoncer les injustices de ce triste monde. On les verra notemment collaborer avec des artistes kurdes (l'excellent "Militan", chant traditionnel kurde), africains, etc... La connaissance des autres cultures et des autres folklore est également très présent chez le groupe: des textes traditionnels hongrois (chantés dans la langue!), allemands (l'extraordinaire "Lied Der Steinkopfler"), espagnols (les chants révolutionnaires sur le splendide objet qu'est "1936"), kurdes, etc... On les verra ensuite collaborer, l'espace de deux fantastiques albums avec le génial et regretté Tom Cora, violoncelliste issu de la Knitting Factory et du groupe jazz-expérimental Cassiber. On les verra ensuite avec Tortoise ou Sonic Youth, etc... Pour commencer le voyage, la discographie du groupe et un premier texte, "Walt Dizzyland", issu du dernière album studio, "Dizzy Spell".
